Kevin Punch brought the message at 1:30 in the Mitchell Campground Church. The weather threatened rain, but it held off for folks to visit graves. Following the service, the adults and children walked down to Walnut Creek to enjoy the water just as generations before have done.
In 1835 Morris Mitchell claimed his 640 acre homestead from the US government for his service in the Revolutionary War. He was then 75 years old and still preaching. They chose the land on Walnut Creek as there was plenty of water and just south and east a spring that also drain into Walnut Creek. There he established week long Camp Meeting revivals. An incentive to “behave’ during the preaching, children have been rewarded by playing in the creek. Camp meetings were held in August and my grandfather told of his childhood thrill of going to the creek, and today I was blessed by taking my grandchildren to the creek.
Thank you so much for including us. Bill will make a copy of this so our granddaughters will see some family history.
