Kevin Punch, Youth Minister for Northside Christian Church, deliver a beautiful message speaking of what we believe impacts how we act and live.  Heaven exists, but what do we believe.

Kevin described four misconceptions of heaven.

  • Heaven is now. When we die, our soul goes to God. But God will create a new heaven and a new That is our final destination.
  • Often people think Heaven is about me. We expect heaven to have things that bring us joy and be for our pleasure. Truly though Heaven is about being with God.
  • Heaven is boring. Some imagine we will be constant drifting beings singing worship songs for eternity. However, heaven will be absent of all evil, pain, fear, anxiety and depression. We will be surround by goodness with a new perfect body, renewed mind and unimaginable beauty. No more death, abuse and no more Mondays.
  • Heaven is full of good people. Heaven is not a default destination, but rather will be filled with forgiven believers.   Care about your eternity and the eternity of others around you.

Steve opened the business meeting y asking for the reading of the minutes. Mike Greer made a motion for the minutes to be approved as written, without any correction. Larry Rotrammel second the motion and the congregation approved.

Steve asked all present to review the financial statements. He made note of the decline in investments. Due to the current economy, this is expected and should rebound over the coming years. Mike Greer made a motion for the financial statements to be approved. John second the motion, congregation agreed.

Steve informed the group he had been contacted by Hillary Manning from Morrisville asking to use the church building for a revival and to have church services. Steve, after notifying the officers, indicated the revival could be approved, but he would need to speak to those gathered for the business meeting before approving the church services. The services would be Sunday morning and evening as well as Wednesday evening. The group agreed the concern was the electric bill costs. As the the cemetery is billed on an annual basis, how would it be best handled. Suggestions included

  • A contract be written up
  • Possible deposit to ensure expenses will be covered for electric charges only
  • Have a minimum of 2 people sign the contract from the outside church

Dave Punch made a motion for the officers to determine next action to take utilizing Adam Thompson as a resource. Rick Thompson second the motion and the congregation agreed.

Wayne Mitchell expressed concern of the mowers raising their fee due to gas prices (currently at $4.09).  The last increase was in 2020 and is currently $350 per mowing. Wayne made the motion to allow the officers to adjust any additional mowing expenses. Rick Thompson second the motion and the congregation agreed.

Steve Mitchell’s term of Treasurer has been completed.  Adam Thompson made a motion to nominate Steve for another 4 year term; Wayne Mitchell second the motion and the congregation approved.

With no further business being brought to the floor, Mike Greer made a motion to adjourn and Larry Rotrammel second. Congregation approved.

Preacher Ken Mallard delivered the message asking what is the importance of Memorial Day? Death will find each of us. Our bodies will be brought to the cemetery. What happens after death?

Preacher Mallard talked about the Pharisee woman weeping and cleaning Jesus’ feet with her hair. Why? Because she understood how much she had been forgiven of and therefore she loved as much as possible. Love is one of the fruits of the spirit and we are commanded to love one another.

Preacher Mallard reminded us of the rich man and Lazarus. The rich man having everything he could ever want and Lazarus was a beggar laid at the city gates every day to get enough to keep him for another day. They each died: Lazarus was delivered to Abraham’s bosom and the rich man was sent to hell. The rich man begged God for a drop of water to ease his torment and to send someone to tell his brothers so they would not suffer the same consequence. If God punished in real time, maybe we would act differently.

Becky Mitchell helped to end the service by leading the congregation in singing Blessed Assurance and Amazing Grace.

Steve Mitchell opened the business meeting by asking for the minutes of 2020 be read. Afterward, an opportunity was offered for additions or corrections. None being offered, Terry Mitchell made a motion to approve the minutes, Mike Greer second. Motion approved by the congregation.

Steve asked if there were any questions regarding the financial statements. None were offered.

Wayne Mitchell moved that Mike Greer be re-elected by acclamation, motion was seconded by Terry Mitchell and carried.

Steve Mitchell has obtained a large quantity of documents regarding the cemetery.  He asked for suggestions as keeping at his home was not a viable option. He asked about donating to the Polk County Museum, Historical Society or possibly the Genealogical Society. After a short discussion, Wayne Mitchell made a motion for the officers to review the material and decide what needs to be kept, what to discard and to whom they should be donated. Linda Punch seconded the motion and congregation approved.

No further business being brought forward, Terry Mitchell moved to adjourn and Wayne Mitchell second.

———————————————————————————————————————————2020 Mitchell Campground Business Meeting–May 24, 2020

Kevin Punch, a minister of Northside Christian Church in Springfield, was the speaker this year. He reflected on the Campground as continuing the legacy and mission of Jesus.

Kevin told a story of how his youngest son was on an adventure, without supervision, headed toward a wooded area; going into blind danger leading further away. The neighbors had see the incident and helped Kevin to successfully retrieve his son before any harm happened. In this scenario, God is the father working to bring the lost ones home and we are the neighbors. Are we going to assist God or will we turn our heads, looking the other way, going about our own business? This was also related to Jesus’ divine encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well in John, chapter 4. Jesus connected with someone out of the ‘normal’. Jesus crossed social barriers – a man spoke with a woman, a Jew initiated a conversation with a Samaritan. He crossed moral barriers – a woman with 5 husbands and currently living with a man who was not her husband. Jesus crossed religious barriers – when and where Jesus can be accepted as your savior; she immediately accepted Jesus as her savior and spread God’s word in town. Jesus remained in her town for 2 more days bringing more people to Him. Who is God calling you to share His news? God is working at all times. How are you helping? This may be a story of the past, but it continues to be our future mission.

Steve opened the business meeting with the reading of the 2019 minutes. Without any additions or corrections, Dave Punch made a motion to approve the minutes as read and Becky Mitchell second. Congregation approved.

Steve announced Bill Pool’s term of Vice President has been fulfilled. Steve mentioned Bill had expressed an interest stepping down in the past. As Bill was not in attendance, discussion began as to how to best handle the filling of the office. Jeanne Thompson made a motion to re-elect Bill Pool as Vice President. If Bill declined the motion, Bill could submit a name to consider to as his replacement. If Bill had no recommendation, it would be up to Mike Greer, President, to appoint an alternate. Adam Thompson indicated he would be willing to perform the duties as an alternate. Wayne Mitchell second the motion and the congregation agreed.

Steve presented the option to the congregation if they preferred the service/business meeting remain on the fourth Sunday of May or would they prefer to move the meeting to the Sunday before Memorial Day weekend. The desire of the congregation was to keep it on the fourth Sunday of May, as directed in the by-laws. Wayne Mitchell made the motion for the service/business meeting to remain as is. Becky Mitchell second. No modification to the by-laws will be performed regarding date of service/business meeting.

Steve opened up the topic of who should be paying for names to be engraved on the Veteran’s Memorial stone. It was determined Steve had paid out of pocket for the last name to be added. Jeanne Thompson made the motion for the cemetery fund to be used to add the Veteran’s name to the memorial. Mike Greer second and the congregation agreed. Motion passed.

Mike Greer had met with Larry Rotrammel, one of the Board of Directors for the cemetery. After discussion of the water flowing towards the foundation of the building, Larry offered felt material he had on hand. Mike indicated he had dirt available to help re-sod the area. Again, dryer weather is needed to begin resolving the problem of turning the water.

Jeanne Thompson asked how long it had been since the ones mowing the cemetery had received a raise. Steve indicated it had been 3 years and current payment for each mowing is $325. Even though gas prices are currently down, mowing the cemetery is very labor intensive. Jeanne made the motion to increase each mowing payment by $25. Adam second the motion and the congregation approved. Motion passed.

No further business being brought forward, Adam Thompson made the motion to adjourn and Linda Punch second. Meeting adjourned.

Mitchell Campground and Cemetery Annual Business Meeting                                   5/27/18

Jeanne Thompson played the piano while the congregation sang “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”.

Bill Moore brought the message from I Peter 5:6-11.  He reflected on those who had an influence on him, most who have since left this earth.  How we should humble ourselves before we can give full honor and unselfish gratitude to those who have influenced us as well as to Jesus.  Is there hope for the future?  Christians have hope: faith based hope.

Steve Mitchell opened the meeting by requesting the reading of the previous business meeting minutes. No corrections or additions were offered and minutes were approved as read.

Steve’s position of treasurer had been fulfilled and he offered his services for another term.  Adam Thomson made the motion to re-elect Steve for another term as treasurer and Wayne Mitchell second; congregation approved.

The current payment for mowing services is $275.  Mike Greer assured the congregation, no matter the number of mowing’s needed, the cost would be covered with the Redman fund; the grass cannot be allowed to become too tall.  Currently it takes approximately 15 hours to complete both the mowing and weed eating.  Jeanne Thompson made a motion to increase payment to $325 per mowing and Wayne second; congregation approved.

It is unknown what Bert Hollis determined regarding the tucking of the building and the placement of the spruce trees.  Steve will reach out to get an update.

Mike Greer requested permission to ‘trim the fence’ along the bottom edge in order to increase efficiency of mowing.  Adam Thompson made a motion for any modification to be done for mowing purposes and Jeanne Thompson second the motion; congregation approved.

Jeanne Thompson brought up the fact the Mitchell Campground/Cemetery is not an official tax exempt entity. It is also a costly process to become one. Until a large endowment is left to the cemetery, with the expectation of a tax write off, the process at this time would not move forward. If someone would like to contribute the filing fee, approximately $400, the process would then be started.  Adam Thompson volunteered to review the legal ramification of not being tax exempt.

Jeanne Thompson made a motion to adjourn and Donald Mitchell second.

Dedication of Morris Mitchell Revolutionary War Soldier  DEDICATION OF MONUMENT

May 28, 2017                                      Mitchell Campground Cemetery Meeting

Bill Ackels was the speaker and he read from Job 14:1-10.  Mr. Ackels expressed our eternal hope resides through the grace of God.  He shared is testimony and encourage each of us to search deep within our hearts to ensure Jesus is there. Mike Greer closed the service with prayer.

Steve Mitchell opened the business meeting and requested the minutes be read. Wilma Mitchell made a motion to accept the minutes as read with a second from Mike Greer and this was also accepted by the congregation.

Steve Mitchell explained his position of treasurer allowed approval for a maximum of 8 mowing’s per year. The previous year required 10 mowing’s.  The extra mowing’s were paid for through the fund established by the Redman family for what is needed for the cemetery.  David Punch made a motion to maintain the minimum of 8 mowing’s per year to increase authorization for what is needed to keep the grass from getting too high.  This was seconded by Bert Hollis and agreed to by the congregation.

Steve recognized the fact Mike Greer’s term of President has been fulfilled as of this year. Wilma Mitchell made a motion to re-elect Mike Greer as President for another 4 year term.  Bert Hollis second and there were no objections.

Steve announced the monument dedication by the Matilda Polk County Daughters of the American Revolution honoring Morris Mitchell is scheduled for June11 at 3pm. Invitations have been sent out as well as announced in the Bolivar paper.  The community will be invited to the event.

Discussion regarding the condition of above ground vaults was visited. No movement had been made to date after receiving the $500 bid, per vault, from Womack’s.  It was mentioned of using the ‘lid’ as the marker and laying it flat on the ground.  The vaults with less amount of decay to possibly incorporate concrete blocks for reinforcement.  The determination of how the vaults will be handled will be done on a case by case basis.  It will be remembered the sentimental and historical reasons for the vault and the decision of how to handle each vault will not be taken lightly. It was mentioned the above ground vaults were initially used to keep cattle off the grave while the land was being used in conjunction with grazing.

New business began with the sign on T Highway showing the direction to the cemetery is coming weathered. Steve said Elizabeth Pace from DAR had already volunteered to take care of that prior to the dedication ceremony in June.

Question of exterior maintenance, specifically tuck pointing was raised. After discussion of what had been done in prior years, Bert Hollis offered to have some people to review and offer suggestions and/or bids of possible maintenance.

Steve confirmed he had spoken with the surveyor as well as the country recorder to confirm boundary lines.  He did not have the exact measurements, but indicated the cemetery owns over 600 feet south and 300 feet deep to give the group a rough estimate.

Bert Hollis offered to bring in Norwegian Spruce trees to replace the Maple tree just inside the front gate that is dying. Mike Greer made a motion to allow Bert to remove the Maple and to plant the spruce trees spacing them appropriately apart. David Punch made the second and no one objected.  Bert Hollis wanted to ensure he would not offend anyone by just assuming it would be okay to remove a dying tree and replace with new and different ones.

Bab Hagar continues to keep the area across the road from his home mowed without request and without payment.  His thoughtfulness and kindness will be recognized by way a thank you card from the descendants of the Mitchell Cemetery. In the event you see Bob Hager in person, please express your gratitude.

Donald Mitchell made a motion to adjourn and this was seconded by Mike Greer.

MITCHELL CAMPGROUND AND CEMETERY ANNUAL MEETING   5/22/2016

Carolyn Campbell played the piano as the congregation sang “I Love to Tell the Story” and “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow”.
Mike Sawyers spoke on The Hope that Lies Within. He gave his testimony of salvation at the age of 10. The inheritance which awaits each of us is uncorrupted and undefiled. It is ours only for the asking. Our ancestors had the same hope during their lives as we have in our lives. Mike read from Ephesians chapter 2, I Peter Chapters 1 and 3 indicating no love is greater than God’s love for us.
Steve called the business meeting into session. The minutes were read from 2015. Donald Mitchell made a motion to accept the minutes as read and Mike Greer second; congregation agreed.
The financial report was reviewed.
Bill Pool’s term as Vice President expires this year. Wilma Mitchell made a motion to re-elect Bill Pool as Vice President. Donna Mitchell second; congregation agreed.
It was pointed out Donald Mitchell had donated a tree to replace the tree which was removed. The tree continues to thrive.
Steve turned the attention to the above ground vaults. There are approximately 10-12 of the vaults and each are showing varying amounts of deterioration. Advice was sought from Womack’s Monument as to what could be done to preserve the vaults. Womack’s said they could take the vaults apart, pour footings and then re-assemble for a minimum fee of $500 for each, but could be higher depending on the extent of damage. Another option would be a work day and the vaults ‘repositioned’. The latter method would probably last about 5 years. After discussion, it was determined the board and officers would pull a group together for a work day and determine if the process could be handled internally.
Permission was requested from contracted grounds keeper to possibly spray along the fence line minimizing time spent weed eating. This request was approved. Permission was also requested to trim the base of a cedar tree in the yard of the church. This to access the yard more efficiently to maintain the grounds. This request was also approved.
Steve pointed out the Kinder family had about 4 headstones re-done if the congregation wanted to take a look at those.
Steve then introduced Carolyn Mott from the Matilda Polk County Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Mrs. Mott was accompanied by Elizabeth Pace. Mrs. Mott explained she and Elizabeth both were descendants of Morris Mitchell. Since Morris Mitchell has been recognized as being one of the three Revolutionary War Patriots in Polk County, it is the goal of the local chapter to erect a monument in his honor. Because the exact location of Morris Mitchell’s grave is unknown within the cemetery, the National DAR Association will not be able to assist financially. The local chapter, determined he still be recognized, is willing, and able, to support this endeavor. They are requesting the monument honoring Morris Mitchell to be placed between the two monuments currently located inside the front gate. It would be similar in shape but shorter than the monument on either side of it. The monument would have engraving indicating the honor as well as the DAR insignia. After a question and answer session, Ruth Mosher made a motion to place the monument in the desired location and Mike Greer second; the congregation agreed. Mrs. Mott explained once the monument had been erected, a ceremonial dedication would be held with the community and special guests invited. She would remain in contact to keep the board informed of the announcement.
Steve announced boundary lines had been determined and the cemetery encompasses six acres. The fence lines are accurate.
Mike Sayers expressed appreciation of being able to use the facility for church services.
No further business being identified, Donna Mitchell made a motion to adjourn and Mike Greer second.

Mitchell Campground/Cemetery Annual Meeting -May 24, 2015

Mike Sawyers was the speaker this year.  The hymn “Amazing Grace” was sung by the congregation.  Mike spoke of how each of us have loved ones who have gone to heaven, many generations of them.  We have memories of loved ones who have left us recently and the promise of seeing them again.  Mike read from the book of First Peter, chapter 1, showing each and every one of us is given a gift from God – the promise of life everlasting; it is our inheritance for the asking.   We are not to forget of how dear God is to us and how short life can be. Mike expressed his thankfulness for the church at the cemetery as well as for the memories made of past meetings and thankfulness of being able to meet and a place to speak with God.

The business meeting was opened by Steve and he requested the minutes from 2014 be read.  Donna Mitchell read the minutes and Wilma Mitchell made a motion to approve the minutes as read, Donald Mitchell second and the congregation agreed.

Steve discussed removal of dead trees leaving wood for the church to use.  More discussion to follow with the board members.

Ruth Mosher’s term as secretary expired today.  Donna Mitchell made a motion to re-elect her into the same position, Mike Greer second and the congregation agreed.

Mike Sawyers purposed having a fish fry to raise money for the cemetery and church fund.  More discussion to follow.   There was discussion regarding the property boundaries.  This will be researched further and will consult the deeds to determine exactly where the lines lie.   Donna Mitchell made a motion to adjourn and Wilma Mitchell second.

Mitchell Campground / Cemetery Annual Meeting

May 25, 2014

Due to the speaker running late, the business meeting preceded the services.  Steve requested the minutes to be read.  The congregation had no questions or additions and approved the minutes as read.

It was noticed, and very much appreciated, Donna’s attempt of painting the walls of the building.  She noted the issue of the paint not covering.  Further attempts will be made, including the use of Kilz.

It was also noticed some of the boards below the chimney had water damage.  Mike Greer made a motion to seek out someone to repair the area to prevent the moisture from entering.  Wilma Mitchell made the second and the congregation agreed.

Steve noted close to $600 had been spent on paint for the fence and building.  He also made the congregation aware some of the investments had been changed, Windstream stock had been sold and others purchased, after conferring with the agent and Mike Greer.

The mailing list was reviewed to ensure as many families as possible was being made aware of the cemetery’s expenses of upkeep and repair.

Steve Mitchell’s position of Treasurer had reached the end of his term.  Mike made a motion to re-elect Steve to another 4 year term as Treasurer and Linda Punch offered the second and the congregation agreed.

At this point, the speaker, Kevin Punch arrived and the business meeting was put on hold.  Kevin asked for memories of the building from the congregation.  Cleora Rowan recalled riding horses to and from with her Dad.  Mike Greer recalled a time he brought his Mom to a Memorial Day service and she pointed out the spot where she had been saved in the building.  Wilma Mitchell recalls riding horses with her father-in-law and seen his love for God and the area.  Linda Punch remembered the Mitchell reunions, having lunch on the grounds and the kids playing in the creek.  Kevin, during his time in school had done some research on area cemeteries and Mitchell Campground was one of them.  He recalled watching a video of an ‘Old Fashioned Sunday’ at the campground.  He noted the memories, experiences and stories of loved ones and purposed the question, ‘Why was this place started’?  Kevin turned to Matthew 13 and discussed when Jesus spoke in parables regarding the sower spreading the seed.  How the seed is recognized as being the word of God and how the seed can be received but some turn the seed away.  The focus had been on the seed, but Kevin asked, what about the one who sows the seed?  The sower, or the farmer, prepares the soil, works the soil and then tends to the soil.  He selects the seed that will produce what he wants.  The farmer in the parable could not have been a good farmer as he was tossing the seed on the path, in the rocks and some in the field.  It is recognized anyone can be a sower of seed.  Scatter the seed everywhere.  It was pointed out to him the hundreds of people who have come to know Jesus in this building.  God called each of us to be a sower and passed around sunflower seeds to remind us.  The responsibility is not for us to grow it, other things have to happen as well; we are only to plant the seed.  When a seed does take root, take the time to nurture it to encourage growth and more sowers.  Kevin then asked if anyone had any prayer requests and then closed the service in prayer.

Steve continued the business meeting by inquiring if the speaker’s fee should be increased.  Donald made a motion to increase the fee to $50 and Mike offered the second; congregation agreed.  A short discussion was had regarding increasing the mowing fee as well.  It was suggested to increase the fee to $275 with the option of increasing further, at the board’s discretion.  It was noted mowing and weed eating was about an 11 hour job, most of it consisting of weed eating, the cemetery could not get a better deal from anyone.

With no further business to discuss, Dave Punch made a motion to adjourn and Kevin seconded.
