My name is Donald R. Mitchell. According to my research, my great great great great grandfather was Reverend Morris John Mitchell who donated the ground for the church and Cemetery which became the Mitchell Campground Cemetery and Church. Now that I am retired and have returned to Missouri to live I would love to get more information about the church etc. My grandparents were Tollie and Annie Mitchell. Tollie was the grandson of Robert Denzle Mitchell who was the son of Jacob Mitchell. My grandmother was the granddaughter of William Harrison Mitchell who was also a son of Jacob. I would like to find out more about the history of the cemetery including the graves of Morris and his wife Elizabeth and more information about our family
I am a descendant of Stephen’s branch of the family. Your ancestor was born in 1784 and mine was born in 1802. My great, great grandpa Stephen was the 10th child of Morris. My brother Wayne now owns the farm that was once part of the 620 acre section homesteaded as Morris was entitled to as a veteran of the Revolutionary War. At least my Grandpa Gerome told me that was why his dad was brought as a boy by his grandfather along with his great grandfather to Missouri from Tennessee. The acreage was divided among family and eventually my grandfather and my dad were born in turn on a portion; and both lived there until their deaths (my dad stayed 5 months after his health failed with my sister, but we consider him a lifelong resident of there).
My other brother Steve is the cemetery treasurer and he lives on Uncle De’s farm (one of my grandpa’s brother’s farms) and it was just designated a “Century farm” having been in the same family for 100 years. Wayne’s farm got the designation during my Dad’s lifetime. Our line is Morris, Stephen (Sarah Norwood), Albert Wesley, Albert Gerome, Donald D, me. We aren’t as many generations from Morris as you are as we are youngest sons, of youngest sons, and youngest sons. Albert Wesley lived with and cared for his parents till their death; Albert Gerome lived with and cared for parents until their death; Donald D lived with and cared with his parents till their deaths; and we kids cared for our folks on the same farm until until 4 months before Dad’s death and 5 months before mother’s death on the same farm.
I would suggest you visit the Polk County Museum in Bolivar about 2 blocks north of the court house as there might be more information on your branch there.
Hello! I am the great-great granddaughter of Abraham Lincoln and Sarah Waggoner, who (any with numerous relatives, including their daughter and son-in-law’s family, the Reeves) are buried at Mitchell Campground Cemetery. I am wondering how to contact someone regarding cleaning stones at the cemetery?
You may visit the cemetery anytime to clean stones yourself. You may send a note to the treasurer with your telephone number and he can answer questions you may have. The cemetery is fully dependent upon contributions and as you can see from the financial statement this year’s contributions did not fully cover the expenses. Interests from the investments were used to finish paying mowing and electrical minimum costs.
